Sistering - A Woman's Place

Health & Well-Being

Poverty and homelessness exact a huge toll on women’s physical, mental and emotional health. Homeless women typically walk for hours every day, life on the streets is extremely unsafe and stress is high and ever-present. Homeless women have access to a family doctor much less often than women with housing. Sistering’s response has been to support women’s access to the health system and medical providers, and to take a holistic approach to women’s well-being by offering a range of health promoting activities and programs on site. At no cost to participants, we offer support groups for adult abuse survivors, diabetes management, harm reduction, emotional management of trauma and anger (Feelings Group) as well as health and well-being programs and services:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Massage therapy
  • Aromatherapy
  • Yoga
  • Reiki
  • Vegetable gardening
  • Referrals, medical care through Community Health Centres and medical clinics
  • Dental referral, partnership with dental school
  • Public health nurse

Programs are offered in other languages as well.
